Since long before the Inquisition, both institutions and individuals have been trying to control access to information: sometimes by destroying it, more often by seeking to restrict its circulation, whether for financial gain or social power. Such efforts at information control are likely to keep happening in any possible future. The ways this has been done historically, and the effects it has had, are not always those we'd expect. We will discuss how information control has happened historically, how it is happening right now, depictions of it in fiction, and how it might play out in the future.
