Now that Zen Cho has published her first novel (SORCERER TO THE CROWN), we're learning more about themes in this feminist Malaysian-British author's work. In her postcolonial novella THE PERILOUS LIFE OF JADE YEO, her short story collection SPIRITS ABROAD, and in SORCERER, Cho depicts adventurous, mercenary, or blase women who use, disregard, or otherwise play with expectations of femininity -- British and Malaysian. She illustrates how both mundane and magical institutions use gatekeeping to prop up their own status hierarchies, and how that affects people trying to make their way in. Intersectionality, diaspora and immigration, the culture of British education, and queer relationships also appear in Cho's stories over and over; let's discuss those and other themes.

This panel focuses on the relationship between tabletop gaming, such as Dungeons & Dragons, and fantasy fiction. Gary Gygax, one of the co-creators of D&D, also wrote fantasy fiction. Gaming environments, such as Forgotten Realms, Darksun, and Dragonlance, have been the focus of numerous works of fiction. Many writers, Raymond E. Feist is an example, cite gaming as a huge influence on their writing. Fantasy fiction broke many barriers over recent years with the popularity of franchises such as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. Tabletop gaming has also risen in popularity recently. How much are the two related? What does the future hold for this connection?
